This past weekend, Nicks Kids hosted a soccer tournament that brought together students from various high schools, including Verbum Dei, Compton High, Centennial, Salesian, PMA, and St. Bernard’s. We are proud to share some exciting highlights with our amazing community!
Nicks Kids fielded two teams, and both performed admirably, with our junior team displaying exceptional skills on the field. The high school squad displayed sheer determination, making it all the way to the championship match against the formidable Salesian, a top-tier Division 1 team with club players. The match was intense, and while we lost 4 to 3, we couldn’t be prouder of our team’s performance against such strong competition. It was a nail-biter, and the game could have swung either way!
We extend our heartfelt thanks to FLAG for sponsoring the event and generously covering the costs of referees, new goal nets, and other essentials that made this tournament a resounding success and heaps of fun for all the kids.
Did you know? Nicks Kids started in mid-2016 with just a few children playing soccer in the Nickerson Gardens development, under the watchful eye of an LAPD officer, Jeff Joyce. Our mission was simple: to provide a safe and enjoyable environment for kids in a challenging community. Over the years, our program has grown exponentially, impacting the lives of 40 participants. We’ve organized trips, exposed them to new experiences, and, most importantly, instilled in them the belief that they can reach for a brighter future.
While soccer is just a small part of our mission, our participants learn essential life values through teamwork and unity on the field. At Nicks Kids, we emphasize the importance of education and personal growth, fostering a sense of family and support among all our members.
We thank all the coaches, participants, and volunteers who made this tournament a roaring success. The positive feedback has been overwhelming, and we can’t wait to welcome everyone back for future events!
